5 Things to Consider BEFORE Choosing A Naturopathic Doctor

Dr. Diana Joy Ostroff here!

As a seasoned naturopathic doctor with over 35 years of experience in this field, I feel a profound sense of responsibility toward the health and well-being of those seeking our care.

Unfortunately, not all practitioners in our industry uphold the same standards of
excellence and integrity that should define naturopathic medicine.

Therefore, it’s crucial that those seeking naturopathic care are well-informed about potential pitfalls to avoid. There are several key areas listed below that you will wantto make sure your local Naturopath has to make sure they are competent.

It is crucial for potential patients to be vigilantin these areas,to ensure they receive the quality care they deserve and to uphold the integrity of the naturopathic profession.

Make sure you find an amazing naturopath that can serve you well. Please read the 5 things to consider below:

1. Avoiding Doctors with One-Size-Fits-All Approach:

Not all bodies are the same and not all treatments will work for everyone. A good naturopathic doctor should tailor the treatment plan to suit the individual patient’s needs.

If a practitioner seems to have a one-size-fits-all approach to diagnoses and treatments, or they are quick to suggest the same remedies for a wide range of unrelated conditions, they may not be providing the comprehensive, individualized care that is a hallmark of quality naturopathic medicine.

2. Lack of Accreditation and Proper Qualification:

A major point to be wary of is the legitimacy of the naturopathic doctor’s credentials.

The potential patient should ensure that the doctor has received an accredited, four-year, doctoral level degree from a naturopathic medical school, and is licensed or registered in the state or country they are practicing. Additionally, they should be members of reputable professional associations like the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) in the US, or similar bodies in other countries.

A lack of verifiable qualifications could mean substandard care or advice which could potentially
harm your health.

3. Neglecting Evidence-Based Practices:

While naturopathy often involves more traditional or holistic treatment methods, it’s important that these methods are still grounded in scientific evidence.

Be cautious of practitioners who push treatments that lack scientific validation, or who disregard or devalue conventional medicine entirely.

Good naturopathic doctors should be able to provide a rationale for their treatment plan that is based on both naturopathic principles and scientific evidence, and they should be open to integrating conventional treatments when necessary.

4. Over-Promising Quick Fixes:

The healing process is often a journey, requiring time and patience.

If a naturopathic doctor promises immediate, miraculous cures, especially for chronic or serious conditions, it might be cause for concern.

Naturopathic medicine, like all effective healthcare, acknowledges the need for consistent, gradual changes, particularly when it comes to lifestyle and diet.

While some conditions or symptoms may see rapid improvement, many require longer-term strategies, and any promise of a quick fix should be considered skeptically.

5. Lack of Transparency and Communication:

A good naturopathic doctor should be an open book when it comes to their methodologies, beliefs, and proposed treatments.

They should be willing to explain why they’ve chosen a particular course of action, what the expected benefits and potential risks are, and what alternatives exist.

They should also listen carefully to the patient’s needs, concerns, and experiences.

If a doctor is evasive, dismissive of your questions, or seems unwilling to discuss the details of your care, you may not be getting the level of attention and personalization that is central to quality naturopathic medicine.
